Camping was a load of fun! I will have pictures up soon. I hope everyone had a wonderful time and that students slept well throughout the rest of the weekend.
This week, the fun continues as we look forward to both Sports Day and Culture Day. For Sports Day on Wednesday, May 17, students are free to wear their team colored clothing as long as it is PE clothes - for example, shorts or sweat pants with a t-shirt of their team color. Here are the teams in case you forget: Earth (green): Bea, Russell, Seungbin, Soohyeok, YuChien, Scott Wind (yellow): Daniel, Liz, Rose, Amy, Jayden, Aaron, Jun Water (blue): Hanson, Joshua, Karen, Samuel, Lena, SH Fire (red): Alejandro, Fernando, Ivette, Ivonne, Yejin Students can wear their regular PE clothes - we will face paint and decorate in class as well. No Labs on this day, but ASP will run as usual. Many of you are already aware of Diversity Day/Culture Day on Friday. Both parents and teachers are preparing an exciting day for students to learn about a variety of countries and their cultures. Parents will be in charge of the morning while teachers will run their centres in the afternoon. Other than these events we will have a regular week. In Reading, we have finished reading Number the Stars and students will begin working on their individual and group projects based on the stories. In Science we are gearing up for our final field trip of the year to the National Institute of Biological Resources (more details to follow in an update here later in the week) while in Writing we are working on short pieces which practice our grammar skills. This week in Math we will revisit fractions, decimals, and percents, as well as comparing data. I bid you all a good week! - Mr. Baker Term 5 begins! The last term! That's it!! Are we ready!? Yes we are!! Grade 4, I'm so proud of all that you have achieved this year! You have shown that you are capable, intelligent, and outgoing students who have faced all challenges with a smile and some elbow grease. As we start Term 5, I want you to know that I wish I could slow down time and have more time with you guys before you head off to Middle School. So, let's enjoy our last term together, and work to the bone! We will be starting the term with Map Testing, which takes place throughout this week. So hearty breakfasts, please mom and dad! In Math, we will be focusing on Area to begin the Term. Students MUST visit and watch the MATH HELP tab to help commit the various formulas to memory. In Reading, we will be spending time with Lois Lowry's Number the Stars. As German troops begin their campaign to "relocate" all the Jews of Denmark, the Johansens take in Annemarie's best friend, Ellen Rosen, and pretend she is part of the family. The girls live like sisters, until it becomes clear something more needs to be done to save Ellen, her family, and the Jews of Denmark. This Friday we will have our Uniform Free Friday, don't forget to bring 1,000 won!
Also, we will celebrate birthdays and our last day of Term 4. Enjoy the weather!! -Mr. Baker- Hi everyone! It seems my post last week didn't post. So let's recap.
Battle of the Books was a fantastic success. I'm so proud of all three teams. Dalton kids, you did a great job! All three coaches reported that our students played really well, answering tough questions and trying their best. We also saw that our Dalton students were showing proper sportsmanship. They were courteous to the judges, friendly to other teams, and demonstrated their maturity throughout. Well done teams!! From last week and going into this week we have been and will be busily working on our two main projects for this term - our social studies project on countries as well as our science project on classifying living things. Our social studies project is computer based - with students using google slides for the country report and then canva.com for a travel brochure. They are enjoying learning about their countries and look forward to presenting to their fellow students. Our science project is a little more old school. A lot of cutting and gluing as they build their own books about classifying animals. Both of these will make it to seesaw by the end of the month. :) See you there! Greetings students and parents!
I hope you all had a relaxing spring break. Time to get back to work. We only have one school week left until Battle of the Books. I hope students had ample time to read and reread their expert books. The majority of homework this week will be dedicated to preparing for Saturday's battles. We will be doing more than just reading this week though. In Social Studies, students have chosen the countries they would like to research for their country projects. In Science, we will continue to work on classifying organisms, and begin work on the next phase of our Term 4 science project - this time, we will be making a book! In Math, we will be furiously focusing on the fundamentals of fantastic fractions in a less frustrating manner! Phew. I had a sudden alliteration attack. Finally, during our writing blocks, we will continue to focus on theme in readers responses. I thoroughly enjoyed reading our student responses to the Three Little Pigs. More fables this week! I wish you all the best and look forward to working with our students throughout the week. Cheers! Mr. Baker p.s. Don't forget to visit the pictures page for updated photos, as well as the Math Tab for math help with fractions to be updated throughout the week. Easily, Mr. Baker's favorite week of the year!!
Welcome to book week! Let's take a quick look at the week. On Monday we will have Global Readers - Grade 4 students will be visiting the library between 11:30 and 12:00 to hear stories read by parents and teachers in different languages. On Tuesday, it will be the students turn to read - this time to animals! We will do this activity first thing in the morning - with a variety of animals visiting, from hamsters to hedgehogs, to Lucy! On Wednesday students are encouraged to come to school dressed as a character from a favorite book. In the evening, from 6:00 - 7:00, our visiting author, Margaret Read MacDonald will be offering Family Night Storytelling. Please come by with the whole family. This will take place in Dalton Hall. On Thursday, Margaret Read MacDonald will be visiting us again with an FP assembly in the library in the morning, as well as a class visit after lunch. On Friday we will have our book swap which will take place throughout the day. Grade 4 students will take charge in the organzation of the book swap store as well as have first picks at all the books. Please keep this in mind and send in any unwanted books throughout the week! Also on Friday, we will be taking our pictures for the yearbook. We will do this after lunch. So, dress sharp kids!! :) Throughout the week, students will also take part in our AR-a-thon. FPTV will report on how our students are performing through points, with daily winners. Let's read, Grade 4!!! Well here we are with only two terms left!
Time has been flying and students have been working furiously. We have summed up our Term 3 work - please look for SeeSaw updates by next week. Those American Revolution research papers are just about done and I'm on to grading them. Thank you for your patience. We had a wonderful time at Job World. Students were happy to have their freedom to choose and visit the job sites they were interested in. They ran from place to place and were attentive in their attendance. It was great to hear students discuss what they enjoyed as well as what they learned. Please click on the Photos tab at the top of the page to see some pics. This week we will begin our Term 4 work. As we do so I must encourage all parents to be vigilant in ensuring that students read daily. Students should be reading AR books, or those approved by me during this stage of the year. I want to know that they are keeping their 30 minute per day agreement. Students should be taking AT LEAST one AR test per week. Dedication is key. Students also must visit XtraMath each day - M - F. It only takes a few minutes and the benefits make it worthwhile. Finally, I want to remind parents that students are marked late when they arrive after 8:00. Too many students are wandering in between 8:01 and 8:10. This is not acceptable. On occasion, excuses are understandable - but not often. Please take care to make sure your child arrives in class on time. A late student begins the day off task. Finally, school will be closed for students on Friday, March 10. Enjoy the day guys!! I'll be here... toiling away... :( This Thursday we will take our annual trip to Job World.
We will leave here at 8:30 and arrive back at CDS around 3:45. No Labs, but ASP is still a go. Students will leave their jackets in the classroom, but take a bag with their lunch and some essential items for the day. Required: - Lunch (with a snack -- one small, unhealthy item will be allowed by Mr. Baker) - A book - for reading on the bus or during any down time which may occur. Suggested (but not required!): - I have suggested that students bring earphones and a listening device if they have them. Some students asked if they could bring their phone. That is fine, but once they get off the bus, the phone will go into my back for the duration of the day. This does not mean that you need to buy a new iPhone tonight kids! I will allow students to create their own groups - asking that they form groups based on interest. They will be visiting different job activities and I don't want to force students in to groups which will mash different interests. I have also given clear warning that any tomfoolery will mean sitting out the rest of the day with a good book. - Mr. Baker - Greetings families,
As we approach the end of term we are busy working on and completing a number of projects. In Science we are investigating the rock cycle this week and students will continue to work on their extensive workbooks. Last week, while discussing different types of rocks and minerals, I was delighted to hear students connect what they are learning to vacations they have taken - students recalled seeing igneous rocks when visiting both Jeju and Hawaii. Great job, parents! In Math, we are perfecting our multiplication of two and three digit numbers using the partial products method. Look for videos soon! We will also be taking some time this week to discuss big numbers. In Reading, Writing, and Social Studies, we continue to use The American Revolution as our source of research and research writing. In Social Studies we are building a detailed timeline of the revolution. Students have researched the revolution with attention giving to dates and details of significant events in the revolution. In Reading, students have been practicing research techniques as we read a variety of texts and take notes to help support our research writing which takes place during our Writing classes. Students have each chosen a significant historical figure and have been writing about how that person affected the revolution. This week we will be completing our drafting, while some will move into editing. On Friday, we will have our Jumping for Hearts event! Students should wear their PE uniform - sweat pants with their white polo. We will be handing out t-shirts for them to put over. Thank you! On Monday we will have our birthday celebrations and Uniform Free Friday (Monday). Have a great week everyone! |
